Job Summary

Grand St. Settlement seeks a dynamic, high-level project manager, relationship-builder, and operational guru for the role of Senior Manager of Board Relations & Volunteers. You will be responsible for interacting and working with Grand St. Settlement’s executive leadership and its highly effective Board of Directors. Of paramount importance, the Senior Manager of Board Relations & Volunteers will build and maintain a range of strategies and tactics leading to a high degree of operational excellence, board effectiveness, board integration with staff and mission, increased volunteering, empowered advocacy, and increased board fundraising impact. You will directly manage a small portfolio of mid-level and major donors and Grand St.’s overall corporate and group volunteer program. Through your efforts, you will have a chance to play a significant role in implementing Grand St.'s five-year Strategic Plan, which is now in development.

The position is a stepping stone for someone on a career path to high-level nonprofit strategic leadership.

Location. New York City - This position is hybrid, with two-plus days in the office each week as the work requires. "Showing face" at Grand St. programs and events is important, while desk work can be done remotely.

This employee must live within reasonable commuting distance of the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Salary and Benefits. $75,000 - $85,000.

Specific Responsibilities

Reporting to the Managing Director of Development and Communications with strong dotted lines to the CEO and COO, the successful Senior Manager of Board Relations & Volunteers is responsible for detailed, diplomatic liaising and support for Grand St.'s 28-member Board of Directors and other internal relationship management. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with board leadership to implement the Board Effectiveness Plan of Action, Officer Nominations, Succession Planning, and the Onboarding & Engagement Initiative
  • Develop and implement volunteer opportunities for board members, supporters, and other partners
  • Secure partnerships with corporate and other volunteer groups
  • Implement the JUMP! mentoring program, including volunteer recruitment, orientation, volunteer management, and active engagement in our signature event, Taste of the Lower East Side
  • With supervision by the Managing Director of Development and Communications, successfully engage, cultivate, and steward a small portfolio (12 to 25) of mid-level and major donors and prospects, with the opportunity to increase this portfolio based on performance success
  • Act as the logistical producer of board meetings, including scheduling the venue, coordinating all audio/video/remote capabilities and meeting materials
  • Provide full strategic and administrative support for each quarterly board meeting, including scheduling and agenda development
  • Provide administrative support and liaise with the Board of Directors of Grand St. Senior Housing HDFC, a related organization
  • Other administrative support responsibilities include:
  • Scheduling and management of executive and Board calendars
  • Materials distribution
  • Tracking of donor gifts and preparation of donor acknowledgment, thank you, and seasonal letters
  • Tracking communication across multiple channels and being responsive on a timely basis without losing details
  • Drafting minutes of the board standing committees - the Executive Committee, Finance, Audit, Real Estate, Early Childhood, Youth Services, and Fundraising and Income Generation
  • Management of Grand St.’s online board portal, including all required documents, contact information, board scheduler, and occasional remote board votes
  • Organize meetings and schedule and coordinate personal visits among/between the CEO, board members, and major donors
  • Supervise NYC Service Corps volunteer coordinator intern (seasonal)


Requirements

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • Passion for Grand St. Settlement’s mission
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is required
  • Fundraising or project management experience or work in a similar project and nonprofit management position
  • Expert management skills for leading project teams
  • Strong people person with high emotional intelligence who can relate personally and genuinely with coworkers and Board members
  • Familiarity with the New York City region nonprofit sector
  • Highly proficient in using Salesforce or similar donor management/customer relationship management software and reporting tools
  • Adept liaison with high-level volunteers
  • Strong ability to prioritize and work effectively with leadership
  • Ability to thoughtfully correspond and schedule with multiple parties
  • Highly dependable, responsive, and flexible
  • Team player who easily works to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Skilled at demonstrating effectiveness through return-on-investment analysis
  • Superb organization and time management skills that reflect an ability to perform, prioritize, and juggle multiple tasks seamlessly, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy while meeting deadlines
  • Able to effectively orchestrate board meetings and support and empower board members with professional savvy on their development-related goals and activities
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to develop long-term plans, set objectives, and track and report on progress toward achieving them
  • Compelling communicator with exceptional writing skills
  • Strong moral compass; able to maintain highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Committed to fostering an environment of trust, transparency, and mutual respect

Required Experience and Education.

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is required
  • Fundraising or project management experience, or work in a similar project and nonprofit management position, is required

Other Requirements. Flexibility to work some nights and weekends is required. Occasional regional travel is required.
