Company Profile

Community Foundation for Northern Virginia

Company Overview

The mission of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is to advance equity through philanthropy and community leadership. Its work is guided by a new five-year strategic plan centered around four pillars and will serve as an inspiration and road map for the organization’s work and impact in the coming years.

Comprised of donor advised funds, permanent funds, giving circles, and other charitable endowments, the Community Foundation works to build a community that works for everyone. We believe that our community is stronger when all people are respected, welcomed, and invited to share their assets and contributions in community building. We work to bring about a more equitable and inclusive prosperity that marries our economic strength with the full breadth of our diverse community. We are wholeheartedly devoted to our neediest neighbors and most vulnerable and marginalized populations and work tirelessly to better meet their needs.

Company History

In 1978 the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia started as a small organization with one volunteer staff member and a small handful of funds.

Since then, it has grown to support an eleven-member staff, more than 280 donor established funds, and is led by a team who are passionate about their work and philanthropic efforts to help the ever-changing, constantly growing community in Northern Virginia.

In 1996 the Community Foundation asset base was just over $1M, and in 2025 has grown to more than $100M. Since its inception, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $100M in cumulative grants to support the philanthropy of its donors and to advance equity throughout the region.

In 2020, the Community Foundation launched its center for community research, Insight Region® as a growing hub for reliable, well-researched, and actionable data and analyses on issues critical to Northern Virginia. Through this work, we seek to inform charitable giving, inspire civic and social action, and foster a more inclusive, prosperous region. Its research and publications have covered topics such as affordable housing, economic mobility, early childhood education, minority-owned businesses, and mental health.
