The Ford Family Foundation

Company Overview

The mission of the Foundation is: “Successful Citizens and Vital Rural Communities.” We make grants to public charities in Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. Our largest internal Initiative is a suite of college scholarship programs, designed to assist deserving students to obtain baccalaureate and graduate degrees. We also operate the Ford Institute for Community Building, which provides training, technical assistance and resources on leadership development, effective organizations and community collaborations in rural communities. We are one of the charter members of the Chalkboard Project, a collaboration of Oregon foundations.

Company History

The Ford Family Foundation was created in 1957 by the late Kenneth W. Ford, founder of Roseburg Forest Products Co., and Hallie E. Ford. Grants of varying sizes were made annually to charitable organizations in three core counties where the mills were located – Douglas and Coos Counties in Oregon, and Siskiyou County, California. The Foundation began to staff its operations more fully and develop new operating procedures in 1996, during a period of rapid growth in its endowment. Grants are now processed quarterly and benefit the core counties and all of rural Oregon. An enlarged Board of Directors was installed, and a President was selected in early 1997. The Foundation now employs 16 in its Roseburg office and 7 in its Eugene Scholarship office.
